This project involved the conservation of two monumental statue groups located at the entrance to the Pennsylvania State Capitol. The two groupings, carved in Italy from Carrara marble and comprised of 18 individual elements, had been placed in 1911. Carrara marble proved too fragile for exterior weather conditions in Pennsylvania and as early as 1928 the sculptor noted that, "Several of them are already ruined and the disastrous condition of both groups is appalling." From then on the statues only continued to deteriorate. The
work included stabilization, cocooning, removal, structural preservation,
and reinstallation of the two sculptures. Micro-fractures, as well as
large cracks throughout the statues, required the utmost care to prevent
any further distress. All work was performed onsite in specially engineered
and constructed conservation labs. |
